Digital Research Infrastructure

AI allows the humanities to extend the scope of research and initiate projects that were previously unimaginable. Making this potential useful requires methods that researchers can inspect, test, and trust.

What I offer

Modern research requires the right digital infrastructure. For spatial research, this often means automated text extraction and analysis, databases, gazetteers, cartographical interfaces, or research dashboards.

The Spatial Studio helps you develop these resources around your sources and questions. We build gradually, testing each stage against the material and adapting the infrastructure as the research evolves.

Core values

Trustworthiness and data accuracy
Make the balance between machine assistance and human judgment explicit. Researchers review uncertain results and retain control over interpretive decisions.
Auditability
Record sources, transformations, and human and machine contributions so the process can be examined, in dialogue with evolving standards in Digital Humanities.
Adaptability and customization
Build tools around the project’s particular sources and questions, with room to revise them as needs change.
Researcher independence
Provide understandable data, documentation, and workflows that allow researchers to use and develop their resources independently.

An example of scholarly collaboration — British antiquarianism and the Levant

Zoe Beenstock’s corpus of references to the Levant became a structured place database. Each record connects a periodical reference with its historical place name, a reconciled identification, and a region. This structure makes interpretive decisions visible and creates a basis for comparing places across periods.
